The history of Praga district in the artistic context will be brought to you by Roman Woźniak, founder of the Academia Theatre, sculptor, performer, installation author, set designer, theatre director and cultural animator.
The walk will be devoted to the presence of artists in Praga from 1980s onwards. The arrival of artists to a certain district and the gradual creation of its artistic myth very often precedes the gentrification process – a sudden change in the character of a given part of the city, resulting in a higher quality of public space and increased costs of living (especially rent). Gentrification is always accompanied by a change in the social structure: from the one initially composed mainly of the working class or a vast spectrum of intermingled groups to a homogenous middle class district. In this sense, artists and other impecunious representatives of the creative class very often become gentrification agents – by entering the hardly attractive areas they gradually boost their appeal.
