Museum night at Emilia
"The Great Learning" by Cornelius Cardew, paragraphs 2., 7.

  • Museum night at Emilia

On May 14th the pavilion will be filled with fragments of Cornelius Cardew's “The Great Learning”, a monumental and rarely performed music piece, for which, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the word “minimalism” was first used.

The composer treated this sparse music material like a set of tools that performers can use to build a community - in sound and through sound. A community that is not exclusive, because it can be created by anyone - professionals and amateurs, even people with no musical skills, since these are less important than involving in human interactions and taking responsibility for a piece created together. Fundacja Strefa Wolnosłowa, as part of its cross-cultural workshop, will provide the opportunity to prepare two out of the work's seven paragraphs. The group will be led by Michał Libera and Michał Mendyk.

On Museum Night “The Great Learning” will create a kind of musical environment for the visitors, but also for the artists who were invited to prepare their own performances that interact with and take place during the execution of the piece. These artists include Brud, Ray Dickaty, Alessandro Facchini, Gamid Ibadullayev, Irad Mazliah (video: Michał Buczek), Philip Palmer, Candelaria Saenz Valiente - Warsaw's musicians, choreographers, dancers, performers and visual artists whose task will be to engage in a double dialogue - with Cornelius Cardew and with the Emilia pavilion. They will prepare performances especially for this occasion, making the building part of their activities. On the last day of the building's artistic life they will create an art guidebook based on its history, architecture, acoustics and symbolism.
