International Congress of Arts Cooperatives

  • International Congress of Arts Cooperatives

International Congress of Arts Cooperatives is the first event in the Współtworzenie series, presenting alternative models of working in the cultural sector in response to the current need for its re-evaluation and reorganization.

The ongoing social, economic and climate crises, require us to develop new ways of self-organization, cooperation, distribution of goods and resources, as well as mutual support and care. This also applies to people working in the cultural and creative sectors. We are turning to cooperatives as an alternative to the current system.

The first Congress of Arts Cooperatives in Poland is aimed at presenting ways in which cooperatives function in different countries. The six invited cooperatives and cooperative platforms from the arts and culture sector will present and discuss their operation models within the context of their respective countries.

The research gathered as part of the Współtworzenie project will serve as an inspiration and toolkit for people interested in establishing arts cooperatives in Poland.

Invited cooperatives/platforms:
- Art.Coop / USA
- Smart / DE
- Lewisham Art House / UK
- Takładnie / PL
- Gólya Presszo / HU
- Cooperativa de Diseño/ AR

The meeting will be moderated by Takładnie cooperative.

About the Współtworzenie project:
The main goal of the Współtworzenie project is to investigate and present the rich ties between art and the cooperative movement in Poland from historical, contemporary and future perspectives. It aims to present cooperatives as a potential model of organizing culture workers in the context of the current global crisis, which requires us to develop new ways of cooperating and distributing goods and resources.

The project consists of three elements:
- an International Congress of Arts Cooperatives;
- an Exhibition presenting the profiles and works of artists active in the Polish cooperative movement;
- The educational program "Exercises in Cooperatives" - a series of debates, workshops and expert seminars addressed to artists and the wider audience, ultimately aiming at establishing a new artistic cooperative.
