The City and Its Landscape. Around the modernist architecture in Ukraine

The Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and the Museum of Warsaw invite to a discussion “The City and Its Landscape: Economic and Ideological Clashes Over Modernist Architecture and Memory in Kyiv and Warsaw”, and to a presentation of the initiatives and researches on modernist architecture in Ukraine.

One of the focal points of the festival is the ways the notion of architecture, and the position of its creators, is currently transformed by local or transnational market mechanisms, or by past and present political ideologies. In Ukraine, anti-Soviet sentiment has risen since the government launched in 2015 a ‘decommunization’ campaign to get rid of the symbols of communist rule, which, apart from toppling Lenin statues and renaming cities and streets, also put country’s modernist heritage of the Soviet period under threat.

The discussants will deal with the need to preserve and protect Soviet modernist architecture and will also analyze the conditions of the Polish architectural heritage after 1989 and the changes of the urban landscape made for economic reasons or political purposes of ‘decommunization’.

During the meeting, Oleksyi Bykov will present his architectural project, Soviet Modernism, Brutalism, Postmodernism, and Oleksandr Burlaka will show his photo project, Balcony Chic.

Музей сучасного мистецтва у Варшаві та Музей Варшави запрошують на дискусію «Місто та його ландшафт: економічні та ідеологічні війни за архітектуру модернізму та пам'ять про неї в Києві та Варшаві» та презентацію науково-дослідницьких ініціатив щодо модерністської архітектури в Україні.

Однією з тем фестивалю є різні способи, у які за допомогою локальних та транснаціональних ринкових механізмів, а також минулих і теперішніх ідеологій трансформується поняття архітектури та позиціонування її творців. В Україні антирадянські настрої зросли після початку «декомунізаційної» кампанії, запущеної урядом, щоб позбутися символів комуністичної епохи. Крім повалення пам’ятників Леніну та перейменування вулиць, ця кампанія також загрожує руйнуванням модерністському спадку радянської доби.

Під час зустрічі відбудеться показ архітектурного проекту Олексія Бикова «Soviet Modernism, Brutalism, Postmodernism», та презентація серії фотографій Олександра Бурлаки - «Balcony Chic».

Учпники дискусії будуть підкреслювати необхідність захисту модерністської радянської архітектури, а також доконають аналізу стану польської архітектурної спадщини після 1989 року та зміни міського ландшафту, викликаних економічними причинами та зробленими в політичних цілях «декомунізації».
