Wilhelm Sasnal is recognized by many critics as the leading painter of his generation. In his artistic activity, he is mainly inspired by emotions, transforming into art anything that preoccupies and intrigues him. Untitled (Anka) is one of his many paintings depicting a family member (wife Anka, and children Kacper and Rita). However, its image is exceptionally powerful. The naked pregnant wife is emancipated, subjective and independent. This image contrasts with images known in the history of art, representing motherhood in association with tenderness, warmth and expectation. The icon-woman in Sasnal’s picture is characterized by a primeval power and contemporary self-consciousness.
