Filmoteka Muzeum

Shot in April 1973, only several weeks after the artist’s death, Krzysztof Tchórzewski’s monochrome film provides unique documentation of the Alina Szapocznikow’s workshop in Malakoff, outside Paris. The director had paid a visit to the atelier with his father, painter and friend of Szapocznikow, Jerzy Tchórzewski, one day before the artist’s belongings were removed.

Moving slowly along the rooms, the camera records for the last time the workshop as it was made by the famous sculptor. Among works clustered in the rooms, it’s easy to spot the famous multiplied casts of Szapocznikow’s body, the sculpture Piotr, polyester lamps, polyurethane Souvenirs embracing photographs, and the last works: Tumors, Alina’s Funeral and Herbarium. Yet, the workshop emanates void.
