Babette Mangolte graduated from a film school in Paris as a cinematographer in 1966, and between 1968 and 1970 she worked as an assistant camera operator on several feature films by Marcel Hanoun in Paris.

She came to New York in October 1970 to explore experimental films that could not be seen in France at the time and discovered the local experimental scene not only in films but also in theater, dance, and performance art, that was concurrent with a radical transformation in the process of making art underway since the 1950s
