The Academy ant The Corporate Public. Research, Bohemia and Self-Organisation
Discussion

Stephan Dillemuth took an active part in grassroots artistic movements already in the 1980s and 1990s. Their aim was to fashion and use the living and creative spaces alternative to the academic, artistic and social mainstream.

In Berlin the artists occupied vacant buildings, bankrupt factories or art academy buildings in order to create ateliers, habitats, workshops and self-organized exhibition spaces. In this context Dillemuth worked out the concept of bohemian research, that is “bohemia as a method of creating knowledge."

Such research work proposes a new quality in the field of education and reflection, standing contrary to trends currently shaping the art academy that Dillemuth criticizes in the framework of a long-term research project “Academy and Corporate Public Sphere.” Dillemuth analyses bonds between the academy (understood as a discursive field of art) and current transformations of the public sphere that undergoes erosion under the burden of corporate economy. These radical shocks influence our perception of art, social role of artists, artistic education and academic knowledge.

During his lecture / performance Dillemuth was be focusing on analyzing the role of bohemia and artistic self-organisation in the process of changes.
