I AM. INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS MEETING (1-3/3)

In April 1978 Henryk Gajewski – an artist, film maker and founder of the Remont Gallery – has organized in Warsaw I AM – International Artists Meeting, de facto being the first festival of performance in the Eastern Europe. A several day event, to which Gajewski has invited around 50 persons from Europe, both Americas and Japan, was a place for demonstrations, lectures and sharing of artistic experience. Its fundamental meaning consisted of continuous introduction of the term „performance” into the language of Polish art, which replaced previously used actions, activities, plays, implementations, events etc.

As highlighted by Henryk Gajewski, the title I AM underlined the substance of performance (presence of the artist) and value of a person, not a unified crowd. For the first time there was such scale of cooperation between the artists of the East and West and establishment of common plane of understanding.

In particular, the following persons took part in I AM – International Artists Meeting: Alberta van der Weide, Servie Janssen, Alison Knowles, Marga van Mechelen, Tibor Hajas, Hendrick Have, Fred Licht, Franco Vaccari, Peter Bartos, Joel Marechal, Laboratorium TP, Hans Koens, Titus Muizelaar, Klaas Gubbels, Akademia Ruchu, Krzysztof Zarębski, Gerald Minkoff, Petr Stembera, Ulises Carrión, Marten Hendricks, Raul Marroquin, Harrie de Kroon, Hams Eykelboom.
